About "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (Sundays, 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET)

02/16/2006 05:54 AM

Put together one very run-down house, a deserving family, several opinionated designers, seven days and what do you get? The answer is – “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The show’s successful first season garnered an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality Program, and awards garnered during the second season include the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show/Makeover and the Family Television Award for Best Alternative/Reality Program.  This year, the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program and was chosen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to receive an award from the President’s Commission on Disability for innovative design and focus on ability, the first-time ever a television show as received this honor.

Each episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house – every single room, plus the exterior and landscaping.

The lives of the lucky families are forever changed when they learn that they have been selected to have their home walls moved, their floors replaced and even their facades radically changed. The result should be a decorator’s delight… if it can be done in time.

Each episode begins with team leader Ty Pennington’s now-famous “Good morning!” wake-up call, when he, along with the other designers, surprises the unsuspecting family with news that their home has been chosen to receive a makeover. Then viewers witness not only the unbelievable transformation of the house, but during the final and emotional reveal, they see how the home makeover has impacted the lives of the deserving families.

The design team includes team leader and carpenter Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo (carpentry/nuts & bolts), Paige Hemmis (carpentry/creativity), Michael Moloney (interiors/glamour), Constance Ramos (building/planning), Ed Sanders (construction), Preston Sharp (exteriors/big ideas) and Eduardo Xol (landscaping).

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is President of Endemol USA. The series is executive-produced by Tom Forman and premiered December 3, 2003, on the ABC Television Network. It will have its season premiere on Sunday, September 26, 2004.

DAVID GOLDBERG, president, Endemol USAIn October of 2000, David Goldberg was hired as president of Endemol USA and given full oversight of the company’s launch. In just three and a half years, Endemol USA has established itself as one of the leading suppliers of non-scripted programming in the U.S. The company’s current hits include “Fear Factor, ” “Big Brother” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” In 2004 “Fear Factor” made television history by becoming the first primetime network reality show to make it into off-network syndication. For the 2004 season Endemol USA will have at least one series on each of the top four U.S. networks, adding “The Next Great Champ, ” with Oscar De La Hoya, and “The Untitled Kathy Hilton project” to the list of shows already in production. In 2003 Goldberg guided the acquisition of TRUE Entertainment, a New York-based production company and a leading supplier of cable programming. He is responsible for the company’s oversight.

Prior to launching Endemol USA, Goldberg served as a programming and development executive at Time Warner television unit Telepictures. During his six-year tenure, he worked on such first-run hits as “Extra, ” the dating game show “Change of Heart” and the game show “Street Smarts.” He worked as a development executive for Quincy Jones/David Salzman Entertainment and, before that, served as a freelance director and associate director. Born and raised in New Canaan, CT, he lives in Los Angeles, California.

TOM FORMAN, executive producer
Emmy-winning producer Tom Forman wrote and edited his first piece for national television when he was 18 years old. His 21st birthday found him overseeing round-the-clock production at a makeshift bureau at the sight of the Oklahoma City bombing. At 22 he landed at CBS and found his niche: real people, real stories and really original storytelling. In his career (which has spanned network, cable and syndication), he has managed to consistently bridge the divide between news and entertainment. He brings honesty, integrity and a crackerjack story sense to subject matter no news division would normally consider.

Forman was tapped by CBS to lead their production of “9/11” – a commercial-free film that aired on the six-month anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks and again on September 11, 2002. In less than six weeks, he turned 140 hours of amateur raw tape (plus 200 hours of his own additional shooting) into a polished two-hour documentary that had all of America talking. Forman has been awarded an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Murrow Award and a Writer’s Guild Award for his efforts. After leaving CBS in 2002, he joined Endemol USA -- the country’s premiere producer of reality television. He has also executive-produced projects for NBC, ABC, and FX.
