Hurricane-Resistance Technology
Since 2001, Mercedes Homes has worked with experts at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Florida Home Builders’ Association (FHBA), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Steven Winter Associates, Inc. and the University of Florida to test and develop disaster-resistant home elements. In June 2005, Mercedes Homes, in conjunction with their strategic partners, unveiled two prototype hurricane-resistant homes in Rockledge, Florida. These homes featured six-inch cast-in-place walls that can withstand 200-mile-per-hour winds/flying debris, self-adhesive roofing to seal the roof from leaks, front doors that swing outward to prevent water intrusion, extended fascia design to keep water out of eaves, a natural gas-powered generator to provide energy for a home that loses electricity during and after a storm, removable storm shutters to protect glass from wind-borne debris and paperless drywall that resists mold formation. Today, Mercedes Homes continues to work with strategic partners to introduce and enhance the hurricane-resistant technologies, and the home builder is currently building storm-resistant structures throughout Florida.
